The Girl Who Read Letters on the Bus

Every weekday at 7:38 a.m., Maya caught the number 46 bus.

She always sat in the same place: second row from the back, window seat, right side. From there, she could watch the city change—tower blocks giving way to corner cafés, leafy streets, little laundrettes, graffiti-covered bridges.

She liked this quiet part of the morning. No meetings yet. No phone calls. Just the hum of the engine and the soft sway of the bus turning corners.

She always brought a book.

She always planned to read it.

But on Wednesday morning, she found a letter instead.

It was wedged between the seat and the wall—white envelope, no stamp, no address. Someone must have dropped it, she thought.

She picked it up and turned it over. On the front, in neat handwriting, it simply said:

“For whoever finds this.”

She hesitated.

Was it meant to be private? A mistake?

Still holding it in her lap, she stared out the window as the bus rolled through Moss Crescent and onto Baker Road.

The envelope sat there, quiet and inviting.

Eventually, she opened it.

Inside was a letter. Folded twice, written in dark blue ink. It read:

Dear Stranger,

I don’t know who you are, but maybe you’re like me—tired of silence that isn’t peaceful, surrounded by people and still feeling invisible.

I used to think I was the only one. But maybe we’re all more alike than we let on.

If you’re reading this, I hope today is kind to you. I hope something small makes you smile.
